Psychology and Relationships - How Are Men and Women Different?

A relationship of any kind is always going to have conflict. That is just inevitable. The important thing is how the conflict is handled. Some people like to sweep the issues under the rug and act as if they never existed. Those situations usually tend to build up until a blow out happens.

A study by the National Institute of Mental Health had some very revealing information. They found that couples that had been together for a short period of time (particularly those between the ages of 18 to 21) were much less intimate ( a little surprising?) and being dependent on the other person in their relationship. They were extremely sensitive to being rejected or abandoned.

Obviously, everyone in the study didn't necessarily fall into those generalizations. The interesting thing is that it was much easier to physically see the anxiety in men than women. The study goes on to say that more avoidant women were the only ones to show changes in their physiological reactions.

So what does all of that mean? Interpersonal relationships psychology is a pretty interesting phenomenon. In the circumstances outlined above, women were much more proactive in resolving the situation. They are more adept at guiding the conversation to take care of the conflict.

Women are more physiologically satisfied about getting the conflict over more quickly. That seems counter-intuitive to what we naturally think isn't it?

As you might expect, men in the study are more passive in resolving conflict. The evidence seems to support the conclusion that men aren't anxious to confront any conflicts head on. The other interesting finding is that men whose female partners were naturally more secure exhibited less anxiety to the same stimuli.

So what does all of this the psychology of relationships really tell us? What you probably knew already! Women don't change much in their levels of anxiety irregardless of whether their male partner was secure or not.

A good relationship counselor understands all of the intricacies of how women think differently. That goes for understanding men too! They know how to guide each partner in the right direction and the best questions to ask. Keep the differences in mind when you are trying to solve a relationship crisis in your own life as well
